Grief has marked every corner of Aftab’s life. She lost her husband years ago, and then her youngest son. A loss that broke her in ways words can’t hold. With one surviving son who struggles with his mental health, she was left to face the world with no one to lean on.
To survive, she crushed almonds by hand for a few Afghani a day. Barely enough to eat, never enough to live. Every day was spent scraping toward the next, with no steady income and no clear way out of it.

When Aftab received support to open her own shop on a busy roadside, everything began to change. From dawn until evening she runs her business with quiet determination, earning around $250 a month.
